Alfeñique: The Sugar Sculptures of Guanajuato, Mexico

This exhibit showcases the artistry of alfeñique (sugar sculptures) produced in Guanajuato, Mexico. Alfeñiques are folk art objects that depict hearts, skulls, animals, foods, fruit baskets and a myriad of other subjects. Created by artisans from simple mixtures of confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice, these colorful and often elaborate sculptures are sold at local markets in the weeks leading up to Día de los Muertos. They are purchased to be included as ofrendas for the deceased, as edible treats for children, or as gifts for friends and loved ones. Come see a Guanajuatan regional style altar, a recreation of a marketplace sugar stall full of this vibrant folk art, and a selection of fine competition pieces produced in Guanajuato!
