First started in 1948, the Arizona Biennial is the longest running statewide competition that is juried by a single guest curator for a fresh look and cohesive vision. This year’s juror is Dianne Perry Vanderlip, the founding Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the DenverArt Museum.
More than 700 artists submitted their work in different media with a heavy emphasis on photography and painting. One of the trends noticed was works dealing with socio-political concerns, and a healthy mix of realism and abstractions. Overall the submissions were of very high quality indicating the confidence and skill of Arizona’s artists.
Of the 53 artists who were selected 9 were from Phoenix, 11 from Tempe, 22 from Tucson, and the rest from other areas of the state including Tombstone, Rimrock, Winslow, and Sonoita. As with Biennials of the past, there are both well established and emerging artists represented.
