CHANGING HANDS: Art Without Reservation

This is the second exhibition of three in a series exploring provocative, contemporary works by young Native American artists within the context of changes in the visual arts. CHANGING HANDS highlights approximately 150 works as many artists from the areas west of the Mississippi outside of the Southwest, including the Plains, Plateau, West Coast, Western Canada, Alaska and Hawaii.
The CHANGING HANDS series, organized and circulated by the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, honors the long Native American visual arts heritage, yet challenges stereotypical views of Native Americans by presenting works grouped by content rather than by technique or tribe. A primary goal of the series is to focus on artists who are pushing the boundaries, establishing new parameters and goals for their art, and laying the groundwork for a revised critical history of their field.
