Papel Picado

A wonderfully whimsical exhibition on the folk art tradition of cut paper from the town of Huixcolotla, Puebla, Mexico, will prove to be a favorite of all who visit the Palice Pavilion this spring.
The artisans from the small town of Huixcolotla have long been famous for the quality of their design and their ability to create ceremonial and celebratory doily-like cut-outs that are suspended across the streets, the gardens, church yards, in the churches and homes during festivities.
Each design is drawn on a master template sheet of paper by an artisan, who uses special chisels to hand-cut through a stack of some 40 to 50 sheets of tissue paper (papel de china). The design of which, is based upon the request of the patron, who describes the occasion for which the works are to be used.
Within this exhibition there will be several unique works as well as some of the traditional themes.
