The Tucson Museum of Art In-School Art Program offers several classes for children, grades 1 – 8, given at their school. Classes range from teaching basic color concepts and elements of art to understanding how art reflects different cultures to learning about European masters. Led by trained Museum docent volunteers, the In-School Art Program is free of charge.
Classes are scheduled on a request-basis and arranged through the In-School Art Program’s docent coordinator.

Single Visit Classes
- Basic Color Concepts
Grades 1-2 (1 Hour)
This basic class covers the how’s and why’s of the primary colors. Students will experiment with mixing these three colors to produce a rainbow spectrum.
- All About Art
Grades 3-6 (1 hour)
This engaging class examines the five elements of art: color, line, shape, texture and value. The concept of “scanning”, a method of analyzing a work of art, is introduced to the students. A hands-on project will also be completed.
- Let’s Tour Our Museum
Grades 4-6 (1 hour in classroom; 2 hours in Museum)
This is a great opportunity for your students to become familiar with the Tucson Museum of Art. The class begins with a docent visit to your classroom that will include a “virtual tour” of the Museum. Students take a *bus trip to the Museum so they can view what has been discussed in the classroom and participate in an exciting hands-on project. To fill the bus, we require that two classes participate. Teacher and parent participation is needed at the Museum and name tags are required.
- Mexican Folk Art
Grades 1-8 (1 hour)
Samples of Mexican folk art are brought into the classroom so students can discover how this art reflects the lifestyle and traditions of our neighbors south of the border. A hands-on project may be offered to the upper grades. These projects will affect the length of the program.
Multiple Visit Classes
To give all requesting teachers an opportunity to have at least one In-School Art Program class, those receiving multiple visit classes will not be eligible for any single visit class.
- Master Pack
Grades 5-6 (Approximately 2 hours per visit)
These six monthly visits will include a video, discussion, and a hands-on project for each of six artists: Monet, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Chagall.
Classroom teacher participation is required.
- Tribal Design
Grade 4 (Approximately 2 hours per visit)
Through the use of masks, design, and video, students will discover the mysteries of three different cultures in three visits to your school. Classroom teacher participation is required.
*Subsidies may be available to cover school bus costs.
