DESCRIPTION:A Touch of Whimsy: Art That Makes Us Smile / Un Toque de Fantasía: Arte Que Nos Hace Sonreír \nResearched and presented by Barbara Sullivan / Investigado y presentado por Barbara Sullivan \nSunday\, March 8\, 2026 at 2:00 PM / Domingo\, 8 de marzo de 2026\, a las 2:00 PM \nDespite the fact that humor is a fundamental human experience\, when it comes to painting and sculpture\, it has been more limited than other art forms. Typically artists are very serious about their art. Profound social and political comments are made and we\, the viewer\, reflect upon that.  There is\, however\, another type of art: humor and whimsy.  Across both cultures and history\, artists have used wit\, irony\, parody and visual jokes to surprise\, critique\, and entertain viewers.  Today we’ll explore whimsy from a historical viewpoint and also look at the different types and elements of whimsy found in art.  And along the way\, we’ll hopefully enjoy some smiles and chuckles. \nA pesar de que el humor es una experiencia humana fundamental\, cuando se trata de la pintura y la escultura\, ha sido más limitado que en otras formas de arte. Por lo general\, los artistas se toman muy en serio su arte. Se hacen comentarios sociales y políticos profundos y nosotros\, los espectadores\, reflexionamos sobre ellos. The goal was to promote Abstract Expressionism as a symbol of American artistic and intellectual freedom\, contrasting with the rigid\, state-controlled art of the Soviet Union. This covert cultural propaganda aimed to demonstrate the superiority of Western values through literature\, art\, and intellectual discourse. It was closely linked to the Congress for Cultural Freedom \n(CCF)\, which was later exposed as being CIA-funded. Some who benefited from the program include but are not limited to: Jackson Pollock\, Mark Rothko\, Willem de Kooning\, Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell. \nLa Operación Long Leash (activa entre 1950 y 1967) fue un programa secreto de la CIA durante la Guerra Fría que apoyaba en secreto a artistas\, especialmente a los del movimiento Expresionista Abstracto. DESCRIPTION:Truth\, Beauty and Goodness: the Classical Virtues in Art / \nVerdad\, Belleza y Bondad: Las Virtudes Clásicas en el Arte \nResearched and presented by Keith White / Investigado y presentado por Keith White \nSunday\, January 11\, 2026 at 2:00 PM / Domingo\, 11 de enero de 2026\, a las 2:00 PM \nThe classical virtues of – Truth\, Beauty and Goodness – have deep roots in the tradition of Western Civilization. In this talk\, we will look at how they have been expressed in the Art of three especially relevant time periods. First\, with art from Greek antiquity\, when these classical virtues were first expressed by Plato and Aristotle. Second\, with art from the Renaissance\, when these classical virtues were rediscovered after nearly being lost during the Dark Ages of Europe following the collapse of the Roman empire. Finally\, with an examination of how contemporary artists are renewing and reframing these classical virtues in their work. \nLas virtudes clásicas —la verdad\, la belleza y la bondad— tienen profundas raíces en la tradición de la civilización occidental. En esta charla\, analizaremos cómo se han expresado en el arte de tres períodos especialmente relevantes. En primer lugar\, con el arte de la Antigüedad Griega\, cuando estas virtudes clásicas fueron expresadas por primera vez por Platón y Aristóteles. En segundo lugar\, con el arte del Renacimiento\, cuando estas virtudes clásicas fueron redescubiertas después de casi perderse durante la Edad Media en Europa tras la caída del Imperio Romano.
