You can also participate in a meditation session in the galleries or purchase 30 minutes of craniosacral therapy from Adriana of Acequia Massage Therapy & Bodywork in the Goodman Pavilion (registration will be available day-of\, space is limited). \nDuring First Thursdays TMA provides space for emerging and established food vendors throughout Arizona to offer pop-ups and encourage guests to support local businesses and foodie creatives. During January’s Second SundAZe\, visitors will have the opportunity to get inspired by the current exhibition\, CUMBI: Textiles\, Society\, and Memory in Andean South America. Come enjoy a hands-on art-making experiences\, family yoga\, and a traditional Andean dance by Peruvian with Tusuy Peru Dance. \n• Art- making Activities from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.\n• Paper weaving- learn the process of weaving using paper.\n• Mixed media stamping- Create patterns using stamps.\n• Family Yoga with Yoga Oasis at 11:30 a.m.\n• Peruvian dance Performance by AZ Peruvian with Tusuy Peru Dance. AZ Peruvian with Tusuy Peru Dance will be dancing the Peruvian Huayno\, a traditional Andean dance mainly practiced by the Quechua people. SUMMARY:Docent Art Talk: Art & Healing: A Cross-Cultural Perspective\, Presented by Keith White
DESCRIPTION:Art has a healing quality that is recognized across a diverse number of cultures. This Art Talk examines its role in three such cultural settings. First\, Southwest Indigenous – Navajo\, with a focus on Navajo sand paintings and the art of David Chethlahe Paladin. Second\, Western Medicine\, with a focus on its role in creating a healing environment along with its therapeutic value. Third\, The East – Traditional Japan\, with a focus on the healing dimension of Japanese temple gardens. \nMonthly lectures examine art and artists that have influenced the world\, from the great classics of Europe to the art of the Southwest\, to the most exciting trends in modern and contemporary art. DESCRIPTION:Join Julie Sasse as she discusses works from the TMA modern and contemporary collection that address issues of time within the context of the museum’s Centennial exhibition Time Travelers. Multiple perspectives will be examined\, including the aging body\, appropriation of symbols and images from past eras and cultures\, and memory. SUMMARY:Adult Workshop: Free Motion Embroidery with Perla Segovia
DESCRIPTION:Explore free motion embroidery\, a technique where one uses the sewing needle to draw\, with CUMBI: Textiles\, Society\, and Memory in Andean South America artist Perla Segovia. Learn how to embroider a photograph using the same technique as Perla employed in the exhibition. You will need to bring a favorite picture representing home for this workshop and will work collaboratively with another person in the class to build community/friendships through the arts. Each person will embroider their new friend’s photo onto canvas and will get to keep this work and take it home as a memory keepsake of this new relationship. The needle serves as a pinpoint in time that records memories with thread. \nBackground \nThe idea of embroidering other people’s memories started when Segovia made the installation “In their shoes.” This is an ongoing installation where she accepts photographs from immigrants in their homeland\, and then quickly replicated these images (without sketching) onto canvas using freehand machine embroidery. This process reflects the abrupt and quick decision-making many immigrants must make. \n“In their shoes” is the catalyst that led to the work that will be exhibited in CUMBI. \nArtist’s Bio\nPerla Segovia is a maker and an artist born in Lima\, Peru and currently lives in Tucson\, Arizona. DESCRIPTION:Hear from contemporary artist Miguel Arzabe as he discusses his artwork on view in CUMBI: Textiles\, Society\, and Memory in Andean South America\, his creative practice\, and how his works draw inspiration from the cultural techniques and motifs of his Andean heritage. \nAbout the speaker: Miguel Arzabe makes colorful and dynamic abstractions – weavings\, paintings\, videos. He starts by finding outdated beauty in paper ephemera from art shows\, modernist paintings\, discarded audio recordings. They are methodically analyzed\, deconstructed\, reverse-engineered. Drawing inspiration from the cultural techniques and motifs of his Andean heritage\, Arzabe weaves the fragments together revealing uncanny intersections between form and content\, the nostalgic and the hard-edged\, failure and recuperation. \nArzabe lives in Oakland and is a charter studio member at Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco. He holds a BS from Carnegie Mellon University\, an MS from Arizona State University\, and an MFA from UC Berkeley. \nLecture admission is $5 or free for members and students. \nUpon request\, American Sign Language interpretation for lectures can be provided. Her responsibilities include the care and supervision of the Museum’s permanent collection consisting of almost 12\,000 objects and artworks; coordination of temporary exhibition logistics\, including loans\, shipping\, insurance\, and installation; and the management of Museum object and exhibition archives. In addition to her position at TMA\, she was also an apprentice at a local art conservation studio from 2006-2017. Rachel is a native of Tucson and a graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in art history. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAmber Doe (b. Washington DC) is a multimedia artist who currently lives and works in Tucson\, AZ. She holds a BFA from Sarah Lawrence College and is a recipient of the 2023 Night Bloom MOCA Grant\, AZ Commission on the Arts Research and Development Grant\, 2022/2023 Projecting All Voices Fellowship\, and the 2021 Abbey Awards Fellowship. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Amarillo Museum of Art\, Amarillo\, TX; The LeRoy Neiman Art Center\, New York\, NY; Gabriel Rolt Gallery\, Amsterdam; La Ira de Dios\, Buenos Aires; Snakebite Gallery\, Tucson\, AZ; and Blue Lotus Artists Collective\, Tucson\, AZ. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlexandra E. Samarron Longorio is currently an Assistant Professor of Practice at the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness at the University of Arizona. Samarron Longorio has a Bachelor’s in nutritional sciences (dietetic emphasis) with minors in biochemistry and women and gender studies at the University of Arizona and a master’s in public health (health promotion emphasis) at Northern Arizona University. As a Mexican immigrant\, being a first-generation student and growing up in a single parent working class household\, Samarron Longorio holds lived experiences that have informed her passion\, and dedication for community engaged research\, and program development. Since 2009\, through grassroots community organizing\, Samarron Longorio has led anti-deportation campaigns\, immigrant workers’ rights collective advocacy strategies\, housing justice efforts\, and the design of higher education resources for Undocumented students in Arizona. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFeng Feng Yeh (she/her) is a chef and emerging multi-disciplinary artist who explores identity\, feminism\, and activism\, under a provocative lens of sensuality\, nostalgic camp\, and comedy. She is the founder of the Chinese Chorizo Project\, a MOCA Tucson and Andy Warhol Foundations for the Arts awarded project. In 2023\, the Pima County Board of Supervisors named October the Chinese Chorizo Month recognizing the contributions of immigrants in America. Additionally\, Yeh has received several awards including the Tucson City of Gastronomy Food Visionary Award and the Downtown Tucson for Everyone Grant. We will explore transformations as we wander through the Time Travelers exhibit and look with fresh eyes at what it means to lay foundations and then step beyond them. \nAbout the Instructor: In addition to more than seventy-five poetry\, short story\, and essay publications\, Laila Halaby is the author of a memoir\, The Weight of Ghosts\, two novels\, Once in a Promised Land and West of the Jordan (winner of a PEN Beyond Margins/Open Book award)\, and two collections of poetry. She holds two master’s degrees and was a Fulbright recipient. DESCRIPTION:On the first Thursday of the month the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block offers extended hours and pay-what-you-wish admission from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. On April’s First Thursday we invite you to explore the museum’s centennial exhibition Time Travelers: Foundations\, Transformations\, and Expansions at the Centennial through different lenses offered by time\, space\, and culture. \nDuring First Thursdays TMA provides space for emerging and established food vendors throughout Arizona to offer pop-ups and encourage guests to support local businesses and foodie creatives. SUMMARY:Docent Art Talk: Toulouse-Lautrec: Montmartre’s Premier Artist-Observer of Belle-Epoque Presented by Harry Hakanson
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with TMA’s hundredth year celebration\, this Art Talk is dedicated to Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Toulouse-Lautrec was Montmartre’s premier artist-observer of Belle Epoque. We will spend time discussing his life\, the Cafe-Concert scene\, and the culture of celebrity that was Montmartre. In doing so\, we will examine his paintings\, watercolors\, lithographs\, and posters that immortalized the people and places of the late 19th century Montmartre neighborhood of Paris. \nMonthly lectures examine art and artists that have influenced the world\, from the great classics of Europe to the art of the Southwest\, to the most exciting trends in modern and contemporary art. The Museum will also be open on those days\, so bring the family\, enjoy the Art Talk\, and then wander the galleries! \nArt Talks are $5 for non-members; free for TMA members and students with ID. \nThe elevator to the Alice Chaiten Baker Center for Art Education is temporarily out of order.
