Join curator Kristopher Driggers\, Ph.D.\, for a talk exploring how Mesoamerican artworks express cultural ideas about the relationships between time\, identity\, and fate. Select attendees will have an opportunity to learn what primary sources say about their own calendrical fate as recorded in the Florentine Codex\, an important manuscript from Nahua Mexico. \nLecture admission is $5 or free for members and students. \nUpon request\, American Sign Language interpretation for lectures can be provided. Never enough time to go where we want to go and do what we want to do. \nThank goodness for imagination! \nThis 2-hour class will focus on connections between art and our own writing\, be it poetry or prose. We will explore transformations as we wander through the Time Travelers exhibit and look with fresh eyes at what it means to lay foundations and then step beyond them. \nAbout the Instructor: In addition to more than seventy-five poetry\, short story\, and essay publications\, Laila Halaby is the author of a memoir\, The Weight of Ghosts\, two novels\, Once in a Promised Land and West of the Jordan (winner of a PEN Beyond Margins/Open Book award)\, and two collections of poetry. She holds two master’s degrees and was a Fulbright recipient. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with TMA’s hundredth year celebration\, this Art Talk is dedicated to Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Toulouse-Lautrec was Montmartre’s premier artist-observer of Belle Epoque. We will spend time discussing his life\, the Cafe-Concert scene\, and the culture of celebrity that was Montmartre. In doing so\, we will examine his paintings\, watercolors\, lithographs\, and posters that immortalized the people and places of the late 19th century Montmartre neighborhood of Paris. \nMonthly lectures examine art and artists that have influenced the world\, from the great classics of Europe to the art of the Southwest\, to the most exciting trends in modern and contemporary art. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Liz Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Hear from photographer and performance artist Liz Cohen as she discusses her artistic practice. \nAbout the speaker: Liz Cohen (American\, b. 1973) is a photographer and performance artist whose decades-long career focuses largely on the intersections of immigration\, industry\, labor\, and women’s representation in popular media. Cohen is perhaps best known for her BODYWORK project\, in which she simultaneously transformed a dilapidated East German Trabant into an American El Camino lowrider while inhabiting a new identity herself as a car customizer and bikini model. Through this immersive series\, Cohen produced a profoundly influential body of work which challenges American cultural norms as they pertain to the eroticization of the automobile industry as well as the challenging role of women’s bodies in that space. Cohen’s most recent series\, BODY MAGIC (2020)\, sees the artist further explore similar themes. In black and white photographs\, Cohen poses with the iconic lowrider model Dazza Del Rio in images which make reference to Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs of the bodybuilder Lisa Lyon. Since 2017\, Cohen has been based in Arizona where she serves as Professor at the School of Art at Arizona State University\, Tempe. \nUpon request\, Spanish interpretation can be provided for lectures. Allan Houser and George Morrison were among those to move away from stylistic traditions and began to explore ideas in modern art. Artists experimented with a wide array of styles and techniques while still maintaining elements of their tribal traditions and cultures. In this talk\, we will take a journey through 22 artists\, starting with Houser and Morrison\, seeing how their influence paved the way for generations of Indigenous artists through today. \nMonthly lectures examine art and artists that have influenced the world\, from the great classics of Europe to the art of the Southwest\, to the most exciting trends in modern and contemporary art.
