DESCRIPTION:On the first Thursday of every month the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block offers extended hours and pay-what-you-wish admission from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. These evenings feature emerging and established food vendors\, unique art-making and gallery experiences\, music\, community partners and more! \nOn November 7th join TMA for an evening to honor Dia de los Muertos and view a temporary Ofrenda by artist-author Melani Martinez. Purchase food from Empanadas el Dominicano\, enjoy a cash bar serving beer and wine\, art and gallery activities exploring concepts of memory and letter writing led by Ami and Laila\, live music by Golden Boots and from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.\, a Death Cafe (register here) facilitated by Alice Vath and Cara Carrillo. \nThrough early 2025\, TMA will host the Mexican American Heritage and History Museum’s monthly history social during First Thursdays while the Sosa-Carrillo House is closed for remodel. During the program\, Mauro Trejo IV\, Los Descendientes board member and MexAm Museum volunteer will share insights on various aspects of Tucson’s history. DESCRIPTION:Saturday January 11\, 2025\n2 – 4 pm\nCapacity: 12 people\n$30 non-members / $25 members\nAll materials provided \nTaking Up Space is a two-hour creative writing workshop that explores some of the themes brought forth by this year’s biennial artists\, including identity\, place\, and transience. We will explore (in writing) our intersections as well as how we move in our space\, both physically and through time. \nWhat do we pick up? What do we leave behind? And when we find ourselves in the same spot together\, how do we have meaningful interactions? \nIf you have a favorite notebook\, bring it along! (No pens though.) We will provide clipboards\, paper\, pencils\, and stools. \nAbout the Instructor: In addition to more than seventy-five poetry\, short story\, and essay publications\, Laila Halaby is the author of a memoir\, The Weight of Ghosts\, two novels\, Once in a Promised Land and West of the Jordan (winner of a PEN Beyond Margins/Open Book award)\, and two collections of poetry. She holds two master’s degrees and was a Fulbright recipient. Laila lives in Tucson\, Arizona\, where\, for the last decade\, she has worked to merge her two career paths (counselor and writer) by working with community groups and organizations to create trauma-informed\, expressive arts programming that serves veterans\, refugees\, homeless youth\, as well as the general population. \nAccessibility  \nUpon request\, American Sign Language interpretation for lectures can be provided. During Second SundAZe: Family Day @ TMA\, visitors will have the opportunity to create their own works of art as well as hear a performance from School of Rock Tucson. \nArt-Making\nMooney Hall\, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\nHangable textile art with Printmaking- Create your own hanging work of art using printmaking techniques as well as variety of materials provided by the museum. \nSelf-Help Zine Workshop with Safwat Saleem\nSculpture Garden\, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\nJoin Safwat Saleem and his daughter Zaara for a drop-in self-help zine-making workshop to process\, document\, and reflect on your thoughts and concerns. Start by exploring Saleem’s installation\, The Self-Help Library—be sure to spend time with Zaara’s books—and then create your own self-help zine. \nSchool of Rock Tucson\nMooney Hall\, 12 p.m.\nSchool of Rock Tucson is a performance-based music school that uses group learning\, live performance opportunities and a song first approach to optimize our students’ musical journeys. DESCRIPTION:On the first Thursday of every month the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block offers extended hours and pay-what-you-wish admission from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. These evenings feature emerging and established food vendors\, unique art-making and gallery experiences\, and music! \nJoin TMA on February 6th for an evening focused on collaboration and collective creativity. During the program\, Mauro Trejo IV\, Los Descendientes board member and MexAm Museum volunteer will share insights on various aspects of Tucson’s history. Mariachi Las Aguilitas is a K-5 grade mariachi group that has existed for over 30 years in Tucson\, Arizona. \nRed Herring Puppets present The Friendly Chupacabra\nBonnie Bradford Courtyard 1p.m.\nRed Herring Puppets present The Friendly Chupacabra / El Chupacabra Amigable\, a bilingual puppet performance based on tales from Mexico\, Central America\, and the Caribbean. This legendary creature invokes fear and wonder\, but in our telling\, a brave girl and her goat tame the lonely beast with friendship. The show features a colorful scrolling backdrop\, hand-crafted puppets\, and original music and vocals by members of Tucson’s Las Azaleas mariachi band. The show is funded in part by the Jim Henson Foundation and the Arts Foundation of Tucson and Southern Arizona. \nRed Herring Puppets\, have toured nationally for many years. They’ve been featured at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta\, NYC’s International Puppet Fringe Festival\, Boston’s Puppet Showplace\, Cleveland’s Maltz Museum\, Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis\, and The Great Arizona Puppet Theatre in Phoenix. Their work has earned a California Emmy\, a Telly Award\, and an UNIMA Citation of Excellence\, the highest honor in American puppetry. They captured everyday life in their portraits\, still lifes and landscapes. The movement fell out of critical favor but continues to influence contemporary art.
