DESCRIPTION:On the first Thursday of every month the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block offers extended hours and pay-what-you-wish admission from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. These evenings feature emerging and established food vendors\, unique art-making and gallery experiences\, music\, community partners and more! \nOn December’s First Thursday explore the Arizona Biennial 2024 and ideas of community throughout the campus. The evening will also include a cash bar serving beer and wine\, art and gallery activities led by Ami and Laila\, music by Sopitas and MizSkoden and the opportunity to shop from local maker Sui Gen Femme and potters from Romero House Potters. \nThrough early 2025\, TMA will host the Mexican American Heritage and History Museum’s monthly history social during First Thursdays while the Sosa-Carrillo House is closed for remodel. During the program\, Mauro Trejo IV\, Los Descendientes board member and MexAm Museum volunteer will share insights on various aspects of Tucson’s history. Unlike the original story\, this version ends on a hopeful note\, as our heroes’ risk everything to become who they were always meant to be. DESCRIPTION:Saturday January 11\, 2025\n2 – 4 pm\nCapacity: 12 people\n$30 non-members / $25 members\nAll materials provided \nTaking Up Space is a two-hour creative writing workshop that explores some of the themes brought forth by this year’s biennial artists\, including identity\, place\, and transience. We will explore (in writing) our intersections as well as how we move in our space\, both physically and through time. \nWhat do we pick up? What do we leave behind? And when we find ourselves in the same spot together\, how do we have meaningful interactions? \nIf you have a favorite notebook\, bring it along! (No pens though.) We will provide clipboards\, paper\, pencils\, and stools. \nAbout the Instructor: In addition to more than seventy-five poetry\, short story\, and essay publications\, Laila Halaby is the author of a memoir\, The Weight of Ghosts\, two novels\, Once in a Promised Land and West of the Jordan (winner of a PEN Beyond Margins/Open Book award)\, and two collections of poetry. She holds two master’s degrees and was a Fulbright recipient. Laila lives in Tucson\, Arizona\, where\, for the last decade\, she has worked to merge her two career paths (counselor and writer) by working with community groups and organizations to create trauma-informed\, expressive arts programming that serves veterans\, refugees\, homeless youth\, as well as the general population. \nAccessibility  \nUpon request\, American Sign Language interpretation for lectures can be provided. During the program\, Mauro Trejo IV\, Los Descendientes board member and MexAm Museum volunteer will share insights on various aspects of Tucson’s history.
