1977, TMA custodia un retrato de un importante artista afroperuano del siglo XIX, Jos\u00e9 Gil de Castro. El museo inaugura esta semana una exposici\u00f3n dedicada \u00edntegramente a su retrato de la joven Carlota Caspe y Rodr\u00edguez. Es inusual que el museo cree una exposici\u00f3n en torno a una sola obra de arte, pero la historia detr\u00e1s de esta pintura es particularmente compleja y relevante para nuestro momento. Creada en Santiago en 1816, hoy apreciamos que la pintura se asienta en la intersecci\u00f3n de m\u00faltiples narrativas. Por un lado, muestra a una mujer joven articulando su lugar en la sociedad. Por otro lado, tambi\u00e9n habla de la intenci\u00f3n de Gil de Castro de ascender en la sociedad mediante la creaci\u00f3n de retratos para mecenas de \u00e9lite. Era hija de un administrador espa\u00f1ol que trabajaba en Am\u00e9rica del Sur, aunque sabemos poco m\u00e1s sobre su vida. Mirando la imagen, la vemos con un vestido azul, collar y anillos, y sosteniendo un abanico enjoyado. Las mujeres de la \u00e9lite de Am\u00e9rica del Sur a menudo se pintaban con im\u00e1genes similares; por eso, la pintura conecta a Carlota con un mundo social m\u00e1s amplio de mujeres de su tiempo. Curiosamente, aparece con una obra de partitura etiquetada <em>moderado<\/em> \u2013 una obra destinada a ser interpretada a un tempo y volumen moderados. Nacido de padres esclavizados, el pintor Gil de Castro (1785 \u2013 1840) parece haber buscado desvincular su identidad de sus or\u00edgenes modificando su firma en sus pinturas. Vemos su auto-dise\u00f1o en acci\u00f3n en la pintura de TMA. En lugar de firmar la pintura en espa\u00f1ol, Gil de Castro escribe en lat\u00edn:<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nMe pingebat Josephus Gil Anno milessimo octingentesimo decimo sexto.<br \/>\nFui pintado por Josefo Gil en el a\u00f1o Mil Ochocientos Diecis\u00e9is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La decisi\u00f3n de Gil de Castro de firmar en lat\u00edn seguramente fue intencional ya que el lat\u00edn hab\u00eda sido durante mucho tiempo el idioma de la ciencia y la teolog\u00eda. En esta firma, incluso cambi\u00f3 su nombre de Jos\u00e9 a Josephus, latinizando su autopresentaci\u00f3n para definirse como un artista ilustrado. A la larga, su estrategia parece haber tenido \u00e9xito, ya que Gil de Castro llegar\u00eda a pintar a muchas de las figuras m\u00e1s importantes de las naciones latinoamericanas reci\u00e9n independizadas, desde Chile hasta Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>Hoy en Am\u00e9rica Latina, muchas instituciones y colecciones privadas conservan los retratos de Gil de Castro. Sin embargo, la pintura de TMA puede ser la \u00fanica pintura del artista en un museo estadounidense. Bajo la luz negra, vemos que, si bien la mayor parte de la superficie pintada es probablemente original, tambi\u00e9n hay \u00e1reas en las que se agreg\u00f3 pintura adicional, probablemente para cubrir las \u00e1reas perdidas. Aparentemente, el lienzo fue doblado antes de llegar al museo, ya que aparece una l\u00ednea de pliegue en la mitad inferior de la pintura. El personal examin\u00f3 la pintura fuera de su marco y not\u00f3 que hab\u00eda sido rebasada, lo que significa que su lienzo estaba unido a un segundo lienzo para darle m\u00e1s soporte a la pintura antigua.<\/p>\n<p>Muchas obras de arte de la colecci\u00f3n TMA entretejen m\u00faltiples historias.
