His work included\u00a0<a title=\"Sculpture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sculpture\">sculpture<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Painting\">painting<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Painting\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poetry\">poetry<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Video art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Video_art\">video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Graham studied at the\u00a0<a title=\"San Francisco Art Institute\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Art_Institute\">San Francisco Art Institute<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"San Jose State University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Jose_State_University\">San Jose State University<\/a>\u00a0before moving to\u00a0<a title=\"Albuquerque, New Mexico\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albuquerque,_New_Mexico\">Albuquerque, New Mexico<\/a>, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_New_Mexico\">University of New Mexico<\/a>\u00a0(1967).<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTESasee2001_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>His early paintings were wall-like grids which, in the mid to late 1970s, developed into more open compositions with sweeping arcs and herring-bone patterns.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1983, he abandoned conventionally shaped canvases in favor of eccentric forms and began leaving the stretcher bars exposed. By the mid-1980s this had evolved into a series of painting-sculpture hybrids, using wood, canvas, newspaper and book pages, which resembled certain African works.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allan_Graham#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0These were followed by near-monochromes on bent canvasses, sculptures made of books and irregularly circular paintings using book pages from sources such as a\u00a0<a title=\"Navajo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Navajo\">Navajo<\/a>\u00a0<i>Bible<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dante\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dante\">Dante<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a title=\"Inferno (Dante)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inferno_(Dante)\">Inferno<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1990s, he painted a series called &#8220;Cave of Generation&#8221;, which consisted of steps leading into large monochrome and two-tone paintings.
