Explore free motion embroidery, a technique where one uses the sewing needle to draw, with CUMBI: Textiles, Sociedad y Memoria en la Am\u00e9rica del Sur Andina<\/em><\/a> artist Perla Segovia. Learn how to embroider a photograph using the same technique as Perla employed in the exhibition. You will need to bring a favorite picture representing home for this workshop and will work collaboratively with another person in the class to build community\/friendships through the arts. Each person will embroider their new friend\u2019s photo onto canvas and will get to keep this work and take it home as a memory keepsake of this new relationship. The needle serves as a pinpoint in time that records memories with thread.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea of embroidering other people\u2019s memories started when Segovia made the installation \u201cIn their shoes.\u201d This is an ongoing installation where she accepts photographs from immigrants in their homeland, and then quickly replicated these images (without sketching) onto canvas using freehand machine embroidery. This process reflects the abrupt and quick decision-making many immigrants must make.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn their shoes\u201d is the catalyst that led to the work that will be exhibited in CUMBI<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Artist\u2019s Bio<\/strong>
\nPerla Segovia is a maker and an artist born in Lima, Peru and currently lives in Tucson, Arizona. Perla\u2019s work has been featured at the museum and is currently on view in the exhibition CUMBI<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Explora el bordado en movimiento libre, una t\u00e9cnica en la que se utiliza la aguja de coser para dibujar, con la artista de CUMBI: Textiles, Sociedad y Memoria en Sudam\u00e9rica Andina<\/em><\/a>, Perla Segovia. Aprende a bordar una fotograf\u00eda utilizando la misma t\u00e9cnica que Perla emple\u00f3 en la exhibici\u00f3n. Tendr\u00e1 que traer una imagen favorita que represente su hogar para este taller y trabajar\u00e1 en colaboraci\u00f3n con otra persona de la clase para construir comunidad\/amistad a trav\u00e9s de las artes. Contexto<\/strong><\/p>\n

La idea de bordar la memoria de otras personas surgi\u00f3 cuando Segovia realiz\u00f3 la instalaci\u00f3n \u201cIn their shoes\u201d (En sus zapatos). Esta es una instalaci\u00f3n en curso en la que acepta fotograf\u00edas de inmigrantes en su tierra natal y luego r\u00e1pidamente replica estas im\u00e1genes (sin dibujar) en lienzo usando bordado a m\u00e1quina a mano alzada. Este proceso refleja la toma de decisiones abrupta y r\u00e1pida que muchos inmigrantes deben tomar.<\/p>\n
