SUMMARY:TMA x MOCA Art Talks: Joel Gaitan & Naomi Ortiz
DESCRIPTION:Two museums. One conversation. This new collaborative series from the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson and the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block convenes artists from current exhibitions with members of Tucson’s creative community. \nJoin from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block (140 N. Main Ave.\, in Mooney Hall) for a conversation between Joel Gaitan and Naomi Ortiz\, both currently featured in TMA’s exhibition Fierce Bodies. \nSupport provided by Art Bridges. \nJoel Gaitan: Exploring identity\, spirituality\, and the stories carried through ancestry\, I use hand-built clay techniques passed down through generations\, combining them with the symbols\, gestures\, and imagery that shaped my upbringing. I create sculptures that blend humor\, devotion\, and everyday life\, moving between the earthly and the supernatural. Through my figures\, I honor the people and traditions that came before me while imagining new worlds rooted in memory\, ritual\, and ancestral storytelling. I work across sculpture\, installation\, and mixed media\, building pieces that feel both personal and universal. \nNaomi Ortiz (they/them) is a Disabled Mestize poet\, visual artist\, and author of two books\, most recently\, Rituals for Climate Change: A Crip Struggle for Ecojustice. They are also a co-editor of the international anthology\, Every Place on the Map is Disabled: Poems and Essays. Ortiz is a Reclaiming the U.S.-Mexico Border Narrative Awardee and a United States Artists Disability Futures Fellow. Through their multidisciplinary work\, they invite people to imagine how self-care\, disability justice\, climate action\, and other relational practices create a collective future. NaomiOrtiz.com \nRegister Here \n\nDos museos. SUMMARY:Meditation in the Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Meditation in the Galleries \nSaturday\, May 30\, 2026  \nMeditation in the Galleries    \nTake a deep breath and experience the Arizona Biennial 2026 through a guided slow-looking meditation led by Desiree Hammond\, featuring mindful art observation and reflective discussion.   \nWhat happens when we experience art through the body\, not just the mind?  \nIn this two-hour session\, we will explore art through embodied awareness. Together\, we will practice orienting\, gently noticing what draws our attention\, and explore how different pieces land in our bodies.  \nThrough guided prompts\, quiet reflection\, journaling\, and meditation\, participants will be invited to slow down\, tune in\, and engage with art as a mirror for our internal experience. Bring curiosity. No prior art knowledge or meditation experience needed  \nMeet Your Instructor: Desiree Hammond  \nDesiree Hammond is Vice President of Community Impact at the Women’s Foundation for the State of Arizona\, and a community-centered leader with over 13 years of experience leading initiatives that expand access\, deepen engagement\, and build organizational capacity. In addition to her work in philanthropy\, Desiree is a certified yoga instructor\, somatic practitioner\, and full-spectrum doula. She advances justice through joy and values-driven change\, grounded in the belief that communities thrive when equitable access to resources and holistic well-being are aligned.  \n$5 for members and individuals under the age of 17 and under; $15 for students with ID; $17 for Seniors and Educators; and $20 for general admission.
