SUMMARY:TMA x MOCA Art Talks: Joel Gaitan & Naomi Ortiz

Main Ave.\, in Mooney Hall) for a conversation between Joel Gaitan and Naomi Ortiz\, both currently featured in TMA’s exhibition Fierce Bodies. \nSupport provided by Art Bridges. \nJoel Gaitan: Exploring identity\, spirituality\, and the stories carried through ancestry\, I use hand-built clay techniques passed down through generations\, combining them with the symbols\, gestures\, and imagery that shaped my upbringing. I create sculptures that blend humor\, devotion\, and everyday life\, moving between the earthly and the supernatural. Through my figures\, I honor the people and traditions that came before me while imagining new worlds rooted in memory\, ritual\, and ancestral storytelling. I work across sculpture\, installation\, and mixed media\, building pieces that feel both personal and universal. \nNaomi Ortiz (they/them) is a Disabled Mestize poet\, visual artist\, and author of two books\, most recently\, Rituals for Climate Change: A Crip Struggle for Ecojustice. They are also a co-editor of the international anthology\, Every Place on the Map is Disabled: Poems and Essays. Ortiz is a Reclaiming the U.S.-Mexico Border Narrative Awardee and a United States Artists Disability Futures Fellow. Through their multidisciplinary work\, they invite people to imagine how self-care\, disability justice\, climate action\, and other relational practices create a collective future. NaomiOrtiz.com \nRegister Here \n\nDos museos. SUMMARY:Docent Art Talk
DESCRIPTION:Discover the people\, history\, and ideas that shaped some of the world’s most influential artists during engaging talks led by TMA Docents. Each month explores a different artist or theme\, making every lecture a new opportunity to connect art to life. Held on the second Sunday of each month from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nBecoming Tucson: A Cultural Cosmopolitan \nArt Talk researched and presented Keith White\, with featured guest speaker Meg Jackson Fox \nIndigenous communities have inhabited southern Arizona for thousands of years. In 1775\, Spanish colonial forces established a presidio\, or fort\, that later grew into the city of Tucson. This Art Talk traces Tucson’s layered history: from its Indigenous roots\, to its settlement as a Spanish outpost\, then as a part of a newly independent Mexico in 1821\, to its inclusion in the United States in 1854 with the Gadsden Purchase. Emphasis will be on appreciating the diversity of people who make up Tucson and the complex interaction of cultures this has created. Finally\, as we look to the future\, we will consider TMA’s intention to be a culturally responsive museum while letting our cultural imagination loose\, as the “Old Pueblo” is still in a state of “becoming”.
