DESCRIPTION:On the first Thursday of every month the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block offers extended hours and pay-what-you-wish admission from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. On May’s First Thursday we invite you to enjoy a performance (5:30 p.m.) by dancers of Ballet Tucson of a new work choreographed by Principal dancer Danielle Cesanek. Following the performance\, participate in a community dance class (6:00 p.m.) with Ballet Tucson! \nDuring First Thursdays TMA provides space for emerging and established food vendors throughout Arizona to offer pop-ups and encourage guests to support local businesses and foodie creatives. This month\, purchase delicious Neapolitan pizza from Baileys Artisan Pizza Company and desserts by Sweets Cakes & Treats. \nThe evening will also include a cash bar serving beer and wine\, an exquisite corpse art-making station led by Ami\, gallery activities that explore expansion and movement facilitated by Laila\, and live music by Bessett and Callahan. SUMMARY:Docent Art Talk: Beyond the Traditional: Contemporary Native American Art\, Presented by Judith Tracy
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the 20th Century\, most Native American artists were restricted from exploring broad expressions of art. Allan Houser and George Morrison were among those to move away from stylistic traditions and began to explore ideas in modern art. Artists experimented with a wide array of styles and techniques while still maintaining elements of their tribal traditions and cultures. In this talk\, we will take a journey through 22 artists\, starting with Houser and Morrison\, seeing how their influence paved the way for generations of Indigenous artists through today. \nMonthly lectures examine art and artists that have influenced the world\, from the great classics of Europe to the art of the Southwest\, to the most exciting trends in modern and contemporary art. The Museum will also be open on those days\, so bring the family\, enjoy the Art Talk\, and then wander the galleries! \nArt Talks are $5 for non-members; free for TMA members and students with ID. \nThe elevator to the Alice Chaiten Baker Center for Art Education is temporarily out of order.
