For the Birds: Avian Works on Paper from the Permanent Collection

Birds are sources of mystery and awe. In ancient times, they were depicted on tomb walls of Egypt, engraved in pottery in China, and painted on frescoes of Roman villas. They appear in coats of arms and government emblems. Over time, these creatures became subjects of scientific study, but have been spiritual symbols for centuries. Whether a bird of prey, waterfowl, or tanager of the tropics, artists convey their fascination for birds’ wide array of colors, shapes, and sizes.

The images on display reveal diverse artistic approaches to birds from the Tucson Museum of Art collection spanning the last two centuries, reflecting concepts of the past and present. Notice how birds are conveyed through color, movement, form, and sometimes human characteristics.
