Obvara ceramic Javelina by Arizona artist Carolyn Fisch. www.BlazingCanyonStudios.com
Obvara, also known as Baltic Raku, is a ceramic firing technique that originated in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe in the 12th century. The technique involves heating a piece of pottery to around 1650°F, then immediately submerging it into a fermented liquid and then water to cool it. The liquid is made from water, flour, yeast, and sugar left covered in a warm place for three days before use.
