Collectors Joan and Jack Quinn represent a crucial moment in contemporary art history as Los Angeles came to symbolize an innovative and prolific brand of creative freedom. Joan became muse and promoter of Southern California artists, and Jack, a prominent and influential attorney, helped various emerging artists and their art dealers navigate the worlds of law and business.
The Quinn Family Collection explores a period of artmaking that is pivotal to understanding current art practices, the West Coast mentality, and represents the strides artists made in establishing Los Angeles as a competitive counter-market to scenes in New York and Europe. The exhibition highlights the significance of the Ferus Gallery’s “Cool School,” the use and exploration of new materials, minimalism, the rise of conceptual art, Chicano art, early environmental practices, and portraiture. Yet, the exploratory nature of Los Angeles art-making and the close-knit network of artists reveals that much of the work expresses overlapping themes. As a result, the exhibition collectively exudes a unique spirit of anti-conformity and the “California Cool” ethos and is bound together by the generosity and critical connection between artist and collector.

Coleccionistas Joan y Jack Quinn representan un momento crucial en la historia del arte contemporáneo, ya que Los Ángeles llegó a simbolizar una innovadora y prolífica marca de libertad creativa.
