Tucson, AZ – El Museo de Arte y Bloque Histórico de Tucson (TMA) se enorgullece de presentar On the Edge: Los Angeles Art from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection, opening December 13, 2025 and running through May 10, 2026. The exhibition captures a transformative era when Los Angeles emerged as a center of innovation and cultural identity and highlights the city’s unique artistic voice and lasting impact on contemporary art practices.
Collectors Joan and Jack Quinn were at the heart of this creative moment. Joan championed Southern California artists as West Coast Editor of Interview magazine and host of The Joan Quinn Profiles. Jack, a lawyer and arts advocate, transformed his office into a space to experience contemporary art, connecting colleagues and clients to artists and ideas. Together, their home and social circle became a hub where creatives exchanged ideas and shaped the cultural life of Los Angeles.
“The Quinn Family Collection reflects a time and place where artists on the West Coast were redefining what art could be,” said Anne Breckenridge Barrett, Jon and Linda Ender Director and CEO of the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block. “This exhibition celebrates how these artists forged a distinctive aesthetic in contrast to the New York scene. Their embrace of light, material, and surface, infused with experimentation, created a counter-narrative. The exhibition embodies TMA’s mission of connecting art to life by amplifying the individual and collective creativity that built a thriving art scene in Los Angeles.”
Featuring artists including Lita Albuquerque, Carlos Almaraz, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Billy Al Bengston, Larry Bell, Lynda Benglis, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, y Andy Warhol, En el borde explores movements such as the Ferus Gallery’s “Cool School,” Light and Space, Chicano art, Finish Fetish, Minimalism, and Conceptual art. A special selection from Joan Agajanian Quinn’s renowned portrait collection, created over several decades, offers a personal view into the story of West Coast art. Together, the works reveal how these artists transformed materials and ideas into a new visual language that continues to inspire.
“Our Quinn Family Art Collection represents a lifelong journey of friendship and admiration for Southern California contemporary artists and their works,” said Joan Agajanian Quinn. “The circle of creativity that has defined our lives embodies the Tucson Museum of Art’s enduring spirit of community and connection…We are thrilled to be a part of their vision and history.”
