In the American West, artists explore creative practices that honor a stewardship of place, and the communities and individuals within it. The artwork reflects material culture alongside collective and personal experiences to explore place-based ideas and stories.
This installation is the result of 18 months of conversations and collaboration, where community curators and TMA staff investigated how mythic, authentic, and nuanced cultural representations can be placed in dialogue to uncover how art of the American West is evolving in the 21st century.
In this exhibition the American West is understood as:
- containing varied creative traditions and art-making practices
- acknowledging the past, present, and future, even if uncertain
- simultaneously rebellious and calm, local and expansive, nostalgic and timeless; strong, multicultural, complicated, and rich
This region is defined by its people, histories, heritages, topographies, and climates. Through this re-examination, time and stylistic expression are broadened to represent a more holistic story of the American West—one that reflects stewardship that dates back millennia.

En el Oeste Americano, los artistas exploran prácticas creativas que honran la custodia del lugar y las comunidades e individuos que lo habitan. Las obras de arte reflejan la cultura material junto con experiencias colectivas y personales para explorar ideas basadas en el lugar.
Esta instalación es el resultado de 18 meses de conversaciones y colaboración, en los que los curadores comunitarios y el personal del TMA investigaron cómo las representaciones culturales míticas, auténticas y matizadas pueden colocarse en diálogo para descubrir cómo el arte del Oeste Americano está evolucionando en el siglo XXI.
En esta exhibición, el Oeste Americano se entiende como:
- un conjunto de diversas tradiciones creativas y prácticas artísticas
- el reconocimiento del pasado, el presente y el futuro, aunque sea incierto
- simultáneamente rebelde y tranquilo, local y expansivo, nostálgico y atemporal; fuerte, multicultural, complejo y rico
Esta región se define por su gente, sus historias, sus patrimonios, sus topografías y sus climas. A través de esta reexaminación, el tiempo y la expresión estilística se amplían para representar una historia más holística del Oeste Americano, una que refleja una administración que se remonta a milenios atrás.
