A Look Back: Works from the Women Artists and the West Show and Sale at the Tucson Museum of Art

In 1990, the Tucson Museum of Art held an exhibition called Primavera: A Celebration of Women in the Arts. The following year, the concept transformed into the first Women Artists and the West Show and Sale. The series continued until 1997, attracting artists throughout the American West. Every year, TMA purchased a work for its permanent collection, expanding its holdings of women artists of the American West. In addition, from this series, the American Women Artists organization took root and ultimately became a national identity, continuing to promote and exhibit women’s art throughout the country.

On view in A Look Back are examples of work from the art shows and are part of the collection. Some were purchased the year of the show or acquired later by private donations. These selections are displayed together in recognition of the impact the exhibitions had on the collection and the women artist community.

En 1990, el Museo de Arte de Tucson realizó una exposición llamada Primavera: una Celebración para Mujeres Artistas. El año siguiente, el concepto se transformó en la primera Exhibición y Venta Mujeres Artistas del Oeste.  La serie continuó hasta 1997, atrayendo a artistas de todo el Oeste americano. Cada año, TMA compraba una obra para su colección permanente, ampliando sus adquisiciones de mujeres artistas del Oeste americano. Además, a partir de esta serie, la organización American Women Artists se arraigó y finalmente se convirtió en una identidad nacional. Ésta ha continuado promoviendo y exhibiendo el arte de mujeres en todo el país.

En exhibición en  A Look Back se encuentran  ejemplos de obras de las exposiciones de arte y forman parte de la colección. Algunas fueron adquiridas en el año de la exhibición y otras  posteriormente, mediante donaciones privadas. Estas selecciones se muestran juntas en reconocimiento del impacto que tuvieron las exposiciones en la colección y la comunidad de mujeres artistas.
