Noble, Proud, Wise, Lordly: Art of the Jaguar

An Indigenous text written in the Nahuatl language around 1575 described the jaguar thus: “It is the lord, the ruler of the animals. It is cautious, wise, proud… It is noble.” From ancient times until today, images of jaguars have been symbols of power and authority in the art of the Americas. In traditions like Maya and Aztec art, jaguars were associated with rulership, as well as with shamanic transformations, darkness, and the movement of the stars in the night sky. Jaguar imagery created by artists working today builds upon and expands those associations, exploring the jaguar’s symbolic relationships with broader ecologies and its power in new politically informed works.

Nobles, orgullosos, sabios y señoriales: Los jaguares en el arte

Un texto indígena escrito en idioma Nahuatl, alrededor de 1575, describe al jaguar de la siguiente manera: “Es el señor, el gobernante de los animales. Es cuidadoso, sabio, orgulloso… Es noble.” Desde los tiempos antiguos hasta el día de hoy, los jaguares han sido símbolos de poder y autoridad en el arte de las américas. En tradiciones como el arte Maya y Azteca, los jaguares se asociaban con la realeza, y también con las transformaciones chamánicas, la oscuridad, y el movimiento de las estrellas en el cielo nocturno. Las imágenes de jaguares creadas por artistas contemporáneos construyen y expanden esas asociaciones, explorando la relación simbólica del jaguar con la ecología, y su poder en lo político.
