This selection of the museum’s holdings of contemporary photography includes Arizona artists Mark Klett, Kate Breakey, Judy Miller, Benjamin Timpson, and Paho Mann, whose family homesteaded in Arizona and now resides in Texas. Each has a singular experience of the Southwest and offers a unique perspective on the world with distinctive photographic methods that stand out in exciting and progressive ways.
Photography represents nearly one third of the Tucson Museum of Art’s collection of contemporary art. Featuring more than 500 works by more than 80 artists, the photography collection spans traditional techniques to the latest in digital advancements. The museum presented its first exhibition of photography in 1952 and continued to feature solo and group shows of regional photography throughout the years. Photographers featured at the museum during the second half of the 20th century include Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Fritz Kaeser, Heinrich Harrer, and John P. Schaefer.
Since 2000, as artists increasingly began to work in an interdisciplinary and pluralistic fashion, the medium of photography has expanded in scope, scale, and content.
