Tense and Release: Art and Mood from the Permanent Collection

When a visitor encounters a work of art for the first time, one of their first impressions may be of the work’s mood. Art can convey expressions of joy and exuberance, though in other cases it communicates deep melancholy, violence, or despair. Works can reflect everyday stresses of the workplace, or relaxation and delight at a party.

Throughout this exhibition there are artistic explorations of distinct qualities of mood highlighting experiences of tension and celebration. Works in these four galleries examine portraits, the body at work, surges of color and images that evoke merriment.

Portraits of both individuals and families may impart feelings of intimacy, but they can also suggest deep unease, nervousness, or strain. The bodies of laborers in motion appear tensed, focused or ready for exertion. Non-figural explorations of color could convey the exultation of release, just as images of celebration and play might be similarly cathartic. Visitors are invited to examine their experiences of mood through works of art and ponder what visual elements contribute to creating that mood.

Cuando una persona encuentra una obra de arte por primera vez, muchas veces sus primeras reacciones tienen que ver con el sentimiento que evoca la obra.
