61 Years of Summer Art Camp
Every year the museum’s education center is filled with children making art for our Summer Art Camp program. Currently in its 61st summer, the program serves kids ages 5-13 in the Alice Chaiten Baker Center for Art Education.
Camp sessions filled up fast this year and not everyone who wanted to attend was able to get a spot, so we’re sharing some fun Camp projects that are easily done at home, demonstrated by our fabulous educators. Hopefully this glimpse inside the Summer Art Camp program will allow you to recreate some of the fun at your house.

STORYTIME: The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Blue crayon needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. Black crayon wants to be used for more than just outlining. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun. What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?
This month’s story is read by Ms. Megan Wadsworth, a new addition to the Summer Art Camp staff.
CREATE: Bubble Art with Ms. Anne
Anne Doherty has been teaching at TMA since 2018. Today, she demonstrates a fun painting project to do indoors or outdoors.
You’ll need:
- Liquid watercolor paint or food coloring
- Bubble-blowing solution
- A bubble-blowing wand for each color of paint you use
- Bowls
- White paper
- Kraft paper or other covering to protect your work surface
CREATE: Paper Marbling with Mr. Nick
TMA once had a high school on site called the Museum High School for the Visual Arts. Nick Castor is one of the graduates of that school who still works at TMA. He started volunteering in the TMALearn! education department in 2013, and has been teaching in TMA’s Summer Art Camp since 2014. Here he demonstrates a Summer Art Camp activity that can easily be done at home.
You’ll need:
- Foam shaving cream (not gel)
- Liquid watercolor paint or food coloring
- White paper
- Tray or cookie sheet
- Wooden skewer for stirring
- Squeegee (or long, stiff object like a ruler to use instead)
- Kraft paper or other covering to protect your work surface
