Colonial Art

This exhibition presents selections from the Tucson Museum of Art’s collection of Colonial art, created after the Invasion of the Americas by Spanish armies. In paintings that represent martyred saints, Marian devotions, the life of Christ, and subjects from religious history, artists gave expression to religious feeling and created images that could serve as objects of religious instruction. Though many of these images were based upon European models – including a number of known prints – this exhibition emphasizes that artists in the Colonial Americas imaginatively interpreted those models to meet the needs of their moment.

Arte Colonial

Esta exhibición incluye obras seleccionadas de la colección de Arte Colonial del Tucson Museum of Art, creadas después de la invasión de los ejércitos españoles a las Américas. En las pinturas que representan a santos martirizados, las devociones de la Virgen, la vida de Cristo y temas de historia religiosa, los artistas daban expresión a los sentimientos religiosos y crearon imágenes que podían servir para la instrucción religiosa. Aunque la mayoría de estas imágenes se basaban en modelos europeos – incluso los grabados – esta exhibición enfatiza que los artistas de las Américas en el período Colonial interpretaban de forma imaginativa esos modelos para crear imágenes relevantes a las necesidades de su momento.
