Contemporary Latin American Art

The themes, styles, and ideas explored by contemporary Latin American artists are inspired not only by Ancient American and Colonial art and history but also by the whole world. As access to information is made more readily available, everything around us, past and present, is rich source material for artists everywhere, including those from Latin America and of Latin American ancestry. Works in this gallery reveal a vast range of source material and artistic approaches, including figurative works, abstraction, the intersection of science and art, and social commentary.

The Tucson Museum of Art first exhibited Latin American art in 1955 and began to collect contemporary works from this area in 1978 with a gift from the Republic of Argentina. This painting was followed over the years by donations from artists, individuals, and galleries as well as purchase acquisitions. The museum now holds a collection of more than 200 works of contemporary Latin American art including works by artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States, and Venezuela. Over the years, the number of contemporary Latin American art exhibitions and acquisitions at the museum has increased and will continue to expand with the addition of the Kasser Family Wing. In this inaugural exhibition, some of the early works acquired by the museum are paired with the most recent to reveal the breadth of the collection.

Arte latinoamericano contemporáneo

Los temas, estilos e ideas analizados por los artistas latinoamericanos contemporáneos no solamente han sido inspirados por el arte e historia de las Américas antigua y colonial, sino que también por todo el mundo. A medida que hay más acceso a la información, todo lo que nos rodea, del pasado y del presente, es una abundante fuente de ideas para artistas por doquier, incluso aquellos de Latinoamérica y los que tienen linaje latinoamericano.
