Cookies with a Curator: Shawn Huckins
While public programs are on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Senior Curator Christine Brindza is catching up with some TMA collection artists to talk about their past work, current practice and works in progress. These chats are part of Cookies with a Curator – a series of conversations about art (and cookies).
This conversation with Shawn Huckins was recorded in May 2020.

The Cookie: Gray’s Ginger Snaps
Ginger snaps are a staple in Shawn’s house; they remind him of his childhood in New England. He bakes them using this favorite recipe he got from his sister-in-law.
First Bowl:
5 cups flour
2 tbsp ginger
5 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp salt
Second Bowl:
2 cups melted Crisco
2.5 cups sugar
Third Bowl:
3 eggs
⅔ cup molasses
Directions:
- Sift bowl 1 together.
- Cream bowl 2.
- Stir bowl 3.
- Mix bowls 2 and 3 together, then add bowl 1.
- Form balls and roll in sugar.
- Bake at 350 on ungreased cookie sheet for 8-10 min.
(I usually make half this recipe because this makes A LOT of cookies.)
