The Mesoamerican Calendar
Drawing of the Aztec Sun Stone, which references the Aztec calendar, from Antonio de León y Gama, Descripción histórica y cronológica de las dos piedras que con ocasión del nuevo empedrado que se está formando en la plaza principal de México, se hallaron en ella el año de 1790…, 1792 (Library of Congress)
TMA’s curators are responsible for the practical work of acquiring new artworks for the museum’s collection and organizing the exhibitions that fill the galleries (selecting the pieces to include, writing labels and wall text, planning the installation and more). Did you know that they are also scholars who contribute new knowledge to their fields of expertise and disseminate scholarly information?
Dr. Kristopher Driggers, TMA’s Schmidt Curator of Latin American Art, was recently asked to write an article about the Mesoamerican calendar for Smarthistory—an online library of art history videos and essays. More than just an interesting read, it provides insights into the people who created the Ancient American art in TMA’s new Kasser Family Wing of Latin American Art.
